In the domain of journalism, where truth and integrity are the most important factors, clashes often arise when allegations of misinformation and defamation surface. Meer Faisal, an independent journalist known for his coverage of hate crimes and mob violence in India, finds himself in such a battle with the Hindutva-leaning news platform OpIndia.
Recently, Meer Faisal issued a cease and refrain notice to OpIndia, demanding the removal of articles he claims are defamatory and aimed at tarnishing his reputation. The notice, which was sent to OpIndia’s director, Shaili Anilkumar Raval, and accessed by Maktoob, accuses the publication of repeatedly publishing false and bitter content about him.
According to the Maktoob media Platform, Meer told that “This isn’t the first time they’ve targeted me,”. “They have previously labeled me with Islamist tags and accused me of spreading fake news. It has not only affected my professional life but has also subjected me to threats.”
The main issue is an article by OpIndia published on June 20th. It claimed Meer Faisal, whose social media account was blocked in India, returned with a new identity and began spreading false information that mixed up anger against Hindus. The article accused Meer Faisal of reporting things in a way that misled people and made Hindus upset. It focused on an event in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, where a Muslim shopkeeper was attacked after reportedly posting a picture of an animal sacrifice during Eid-al-Adha.
The notice counters OpIndia’s claims, stating that the article falsely reported the incident as involving a cow, whereas police investigations confirmed the animal in question was not a cow but a buffalo—a legal and permissible animal for slaughter in the state. Meer Faisal’s lawyer says this mistake harms his client’s reputation and stirs up unnecessary tensions between different groups.
The notice also demands that OpIndia immediately take back the article that caused trouble, apologize without any conditions, and pay Meer Faisal Rs. 10,000,000 (Rupees One Crore) for hurting his reputation and causing him mental pain.
Meer Faisal’s lawyer stressed how serious the situation is and said that if OpIndia doesn’t meet these demands within 24 hours, they’ll take legal action.
OpIndia, known for its right-wing views and criticism of Islam, has not yet responded publicly to Meer Faisal’s statements and demands. It remains to be seen how they will address this issue.
