NCHRO filed a complaint in the NHRC against alleged death of Dalit sanitation worker in police custody.

New Delhi : On October 20, 2021, a youth by the name of Arun Valimiki was declared brought dead at the hospital when the police took him there from the Jagdishpura police station in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.

Arun was accused of having stolen Rs. 25 lakh from a storage room in Agra. He was taken to the Jagdishpura police station by the police, where he also used to work as a sanitation worker. The police say that when they went to his house to collect the money, Arun fell ill and was then taken to a hospital. The family of the victim has pressed for an investigation into the alleged custodial death of Arun, and have alleged that he was beaten up by the police in custody, as a result of which he died.

 

Against this incident, human rights organisation the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) filed a complaint in the National Human Rights Commission. The complaint was filed on October 21, 2021 by the Secretary of the UP chapter of NCHRO, Adv. Sarfaraz Malik. We have urged the NHRC to look into the case and ensure a fair investigation.
