The family of journalist Risha Hussain, who works with TV9 Bharatvarsh, said they have been unable to contact her since Wednesday after she travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
Hussain, who is from Jaipur, left New Delhi on the morning of Sept. 28, her sister Kainat Jafri said.
Jafri said Hussain last messaged a friend at around 6-7 p.m. Indian time on Wednesday, telling the friend that she was being detained and asking her to inform the family.
“We are worried and trying our best to contact her,” Jafri said.
According to the family, Hussain had completed her Umrah and was scheduled to travel to Medina.
Her last Instagram post was a video reel showing her posing in front of the Mecca Clock Tower near the Grand Mosque. The video featured an Urdu nasheed praising Imam Hussain.
Hussain is from the Shia Muslim community, her family said.
The circumstances surrounding the reported detention were not immediately clear. The family said it was trying to establish contact with Hussain and find out where she was being held.
