Sharjeel Imam, who has been in custody in connection with the 2020 North-East Delhi riots’ larger conspiracy case, was released from Tihar Jail on Sunday after being granted seven days of interim bail by a Delhi court. The bail is valid from October 4 to October 10, 2026.

The Karkardooma Court granted the temporary relief to Imam so that he could attend the weddings of his two cousins, scheduled to take place in Delhi and Bihar. The court directed him to surrender before the jail authorities on the evening of October 10 after the interim bail period ends.

Imam is facing prosecution under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and other provisions in the case related to the February 2020 violence in North-East Delhi. He was arrested in January 2020 and has remained in custody during the ongoing legal proceedings.

The temporary release comes shortly after the Delhi High Court, on September 30, declined Imam’s regular bail plea in the same case. The court also rejected the regular bail plea of co-accused Umar Khalid.

The seven-day interim bail, therefore, provides Imam temporary relief while his legal proceedings in the UAPA case continue.
