Several Left-affiliated student organisations will join a protest in the national capital on October 10 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), All India Students’ Federation (AISF), All India Students’ Association (AISA), Progressive Students’ Union (PSU) and All India Students’ Bloc (AISB) said they would march to Jantar Mantar “in large numbers” along with other organisations.
The groups have criticised the SIR exercise, claiming it has excluded a large number of voters and affected Muslims, migrants and other marginalised sections. They have demanded its withdrawal, reforms in the Election Commission and action against the CEC.
In a joint statement, the organisations said the campaign against Kumar had intensified across the country, with thousands of people joining demonstrations in defence of democratic and constitutional values.
They also alleged that protesters had faced detention and use of force by police, while journalists covering the demonstrations had also encountered difficulties.
The student organisations said their participation was aimed at strengthening a broader movement against the SIR and what they described as attacks on democratic dissent.
They appealed to democratic organisations and individuals to join the October 10 march and “make the voice of dissent louder”.
