Over 100 detained after stone-pelting over mosque encroachment dispute in Jaipur’s Chomu

Internet services were also suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent the situation from escalating

Police in Jaipur detained more than 100 people on Friday after a stone-pelting incident in the city’s Chomu area following a dispute linked to alleged encroachment near a mosque, officials said, ANI reported.

Tension flared when police moved to act on a long-standing dispute near a religious site, leading to stones being thrown at security personnel and injuries to some policemen, Jaipur West Deputy Commissioner of Police Hanuman Prasad Meena said.

“Tension arose in Chaumu over a dispute related to a religious site, and when police action was taken, miscreants pelted stones at the police,” Meena said, adding that 110 people had been taken into custody.

Police carried out detentions from several locations and deployed additional forces in the area. Internet services were also suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent the situation from escalating, officials said.

Jaipur Special Police Commissioner Rahul Prakash said those attempting to disturb public order had been identified and detained. “Those who appeared suspicious were brought in. Attempts were also made at some places to protest against the police… The situation on the spot is peaceful,” he said, adding that further arrests could follow.

The violence occurred near the Kalandari Mosque, where a dispute over alleged encroachment has been ongoing for some time. Police said one of the parties had earlier voluntarily removed a disputed structure.

Rajasthan minister Jawahar Singh Bedam said the violence was unwarranted and defended the police action. He said authorities had moved to remove illegal structures near the Jaipur–Sikar road due to safety concerns and rising accidents.

He alleged that trouble broke out when some people attempted to reinstall railings at the cleared site, prompting police intervention. “They started pelting stones at the police,” Bedam said, praising officers for restoring order and taking action against those involved.
