Police stepped in to defuse tensions in Hyderabad’s Amberpet area on Thursday night after slogan-shouting during a Shivaji Jayanti procession near a mosque where Taraweeh prayers were under way, officials said, reported local media.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when participants in a procession marking the birth anniversary of 17th-century Maratha ruler Shivaji passed by a Jama Masjid in Amberpet, local media reported.
Some members of the procession allegedly raised slogans as prayers were being conducted inside the mosque. Worshippers returning after offering Taraweeh prayers gathered near the mosque and responded with slogans, police said.
An officer at the Amberpet police station said the issue was primarily related to sound levels.
“The sound from the mosque was above prescribed limits. Some members of the procession objected. We intervened immediately and asked those concerned to reduce the sound,” the officer said.
Police personnel deployed in the area dispersed both groups to prevent escalation, and additional forces were sent as a precaution. Videos shared on social media showed police separating members of the two groups.
Rakshita Murthy, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Secunderabad Zone, reached the spot and held discussions with local community representatives. She appealed for calm and urged residents not to spread rumours.
“The situation is peaceful now. An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain how the incident began,” she said.
Police said normalcy was restored shortly after their intervention. No detentions were made and no case had been registered at the time of reporting.
Authorities urged residents to maintain peace and refrain from sharing unverified information online.
