Sultan Iqbalbhai Sheikh, a Muslim man, died and seven others were injured in a clash between two groups at a residential society in Dakor town of Gujarat’s Kheda district on Wednesday night, NDTV reported. The violence broke out during Navratri celebrations following an argument reportedly linked to voting in the previous municipal elections.
The clash occurred around 11 pm near Satyam Society in the Navi Nagari locality, police officials said. An argument over support for an independent candidate in the municipal polls escalated into a physical confrontation involving sharp weapons.
Eight people were injured in the violence, including five from one group and three from the other. They were taken to the Dakor sub-district hospital, while those with serious injuries were shifted to the civil hospital in Nadiad for further treatment.
Sheikh later died of his injuries while receiving treatment.
The incident heightened tensions in the locality, prompting authorities to deploy additional security personnel to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.
Senior police officials, including the superintendent of police and deputy superintendent of police, reached the scene along with teams from the Special Operations Group and the Local Crime Branch.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijay Patel said police had detained eight suspects from each group in connection with the clash. Legal proceedings, including murder-related charges, have been initiated, he said, adding that multiple cases would be registered.
