The All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Tuesday condemned what it described as “open aggression” by the United States and Israel against Iran and urged the United Nations to intervene to secure an immediate ceasefire.
In a statement, the Board’s spokesperson S.Q.R. Ilyas said the joint U.S.-Israeli action risked pushing West Asia into a wider conflict and called on the international community to take “effective and concrete steps” to prevent further escalation.
Ilyas said negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme had been making progress, citing remarks by Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, who had been mediating the talks. He alleged that Washington’s decision to end the negotiations, followed by military action alongside Israel, suggested the diplomatic process was not pursued in earnest.
The Board expressed sorrow over the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing it as a major loss for the Muslim community worldwide. It said targeting the leadership of a sovereign country and discussing regime change amounted to a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
The statement said the conflict had destabilised the wider Middle East, noting that while some European countries were backing the United States, Russia and China had supported Iran. It warned that without urgent diplomatic intervention, the crisis could expand further, worsening humanitarian and economic consequences, particularly for developing nations.
The Board also said India could have played a “balanced and dignified” mediatory role at a critical juncture but expressed concern over what it called the absence of an official condolence message on Khamenei’s death.
It appealed to India’s leadership, the United Nations and the broader international community to take immediate steps to halt the conflict.
