The incident in Nalbari is among several reports of disruptions to Christmas celebrations and attacks on Christians across the country in recent days.
Members of the Bajrang Dal vandalised a Christian missionary school in Assam’s Nalbari district on Wednesday, damaging Christmas decorations and posters, police said, reported Scroll.in
The incident took place at St Mary’s School in Panigaon village, where alleged members of the right-wing Hindu group entered the campus and set fire to decorations prepared for Christmas.
A video circulated by India Today NE showed the group raising slogans including “Jai Shri Ram” as decorations burned.
In a separate incident in the same district, around 15 to 20 Bajrang Dal members allegedly targeted a local shop selling Christmas-related items, forcing it to shut down, according to a report by Asom Live.
“I didn’t know that I can’t sell Christmas decoration goods,’“ the channel quoted the shopkeeper as saying. “The members of the Bajrang Dal came, threw the items in the drain and torched some of them.”
The incidents in Nalbari are among several reports of disruptions to Christmas celebrations and attacks on Christians across the country in recent days.
In Kerala, police arrested a worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh after a group of children singing Christmas carols was allegedly attacked while visiting homes in Pudussery village in Palakkad district on Monday. The RSS is the ideological parent of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which leads the federal government.
In Uttarakhand, a state-run hotel in Haridwar cancelled a Christmas event planned on the banks of the Ganga river following protests by the Ganga Sabha, which manages the Har-ki-Pauri ghat.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj on Monday shared a video said to be from Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area, showing men threatening women and children wearing Santa Claus caps. Police later said the episode was a “minor and momentary verbal disagreement” that did not escalate into a law and order issue, according to PTI.
On Tuesday, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India said there had been an “alarming rise in attacks” on Christians ahead of Christmas, warning that such incidents weaken constitutional protections guaranteeing religious freedom.
The bishops said they were “particularly shocked” by an incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, where a visually impaired woman attending a Christmas programme was allegedly assaulted by a BJP leader.
The attack occurred on Saturday inside a church, where BJP Jabalpur vice-president Anju Bhargava accused the woman of carrying out religious conversions. The incident reportedly took place in the presence of a police officer.
