The incident comes amid wider unrest following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who died from gunshot wounds at a hospital in Singapore on Thursday.
A Hindu man was killed by a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district on Thursday night after allegations of blasphemy, police said.
The victim, identified by local media as 25-year-old factory worker Dipu Chandra Das, was assaulted by a crowd and later found dead, according to police cited by BBC Bangla.
Officers recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, PTI news agency reported.
Police said the killing led to heightened tensions in the area and that security measures were taken to restore calm.
Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, condemned the attack. “I deeply condemns” the lynching, he said in a statement. “There is no space for such violence in new Bangladesh,” it added. “The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared.”
The incident comes amid wider unrest following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who died from gunshot wounds at a hospital in Singapore on Thursday. Hadi had been a leading figure in the 2024 student protests that helped topple the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Demonstrations have since spread across Dhaka and other cities, with attacks reported on newspaper offices and properties linked to the Awami League.
