ED files chargesheet in Al-Falah case, attaches assets worth Rs 140 crore

Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against Jawad Ahmad Siddiqui, chairman of the Al-Falah group, and the Al-Falah Charitable Trust in a money-laundering case, the agency said on Friday.

The ED said it has also attached assets worth about 140 crore rupees belonging to Al-Falah University, which is run by the group and has come under scrutiny in an investigation linked to a deadly blast near Delhi’s Red Fort in November.

Siddiqui was arrested on Nov. 18 and is currently in judicial custody. The agency said it has quantified the alleged proceeds of crime at about Rs 4,930 crore.

The case relates to the alleged generation and laundering of funds through the trust, Al-Falah University and other entities linked to the group.

The blast near the Red Fort metro station killed 13 people. The investigators later described it as a terrorist incident, and the National Investigation Agency has arrested at least nine people in connection with the case.

Police have alleged that key suspects used premises at Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabad, part of Al-Falah University, to plan logistics for transporting explosive material. The vehicle used in the blast was also allegedly parked on the campus for several days.

The ED’s case is based on police complaints alleging that Al-Falah University falsely claimed accreditation status and misrepresented its eligibility under higher education regulations. The University Grants Commission has said the institution is recognised only as a state private university and has never been eligible for central grants.

The agency alleged that Siddiqui exercised complete administrative and financial control over the trust and the university, and that more than 11 billion rupees were routed to firms controlled by his family.
