Ghaziabad: Police probe video of cop using ‘device’ to test nationality of Muslim family from Bihar

The video, recorded during a police exercise in the Kaushambi area, shows an officer placing what appears to be a mobile phone on the back of an elderly man and declaring that he was “from Bangladesh.”

Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad have ordered an inquiry after a video circulated on social media showing a police officer claiming to use a device to determine whether a man was an illegal immigrant, triggering allegations of intimidation in a slum settlement.

The video, recorded during a police exercise in the Kaushambi area, shows an officer placing what appears to be a mobile phone on the back of an elderly man and declaring that he was “from Bangladesh.” The officer is also heard telling residents that the police had a machine that could detect lies.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Trans-Hindon) Nimish Patil said the video was filmed during a routine “area domination exercise” conducted by personnel from Kaushambi police station along with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) in the Bihari Market area on December 23.

“The exercise was part of regular security arrangements ahead of Christmas and New Year,” Patil said. “After the video surfaced, an inquiry has been ordered and assigned to the ACP of the Indirapuram circle.”

The incident drew sharp criticism from AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who questioned the conduct of the officer seen in the video. In a post on X, Owaisi said the same device should be placed “on the cop’s head to see if his first floor has cerebrum,” calling the incident “a clear example of hatred and communal bias” and noting that the man’s name was Mohammad Sadiq from Araria district in Bihar.

Police officials said the officer seen in the video is the station house officer of Kaushambi police station, though his identity has not been officially confirmed pending the outcome of the inquiry.

In the footage, a woman and a minor girl are seen telling officers that they are residents of Araria district in Bihar and showing documents on a mobile phone, but the police personnel appear unconvinced.

An area domination exercise typically involves increased police and paramilitary presence in sensitive or densely populated areas to deter crime and maintain public order.

The family involved has alleged harassment by the police. Mohammad Saddique, 76, the man seen in the video, said officers repeatedly questioned his family’s nationality despite them producing documents.

“We showed all the proof that we are from Bihar,” said Saddique, who has lived in Ghaziabad since 1987 and earns a living selling fish.
