A religious flag allegedly set on fire during a Durga idol immersion procession in Uttar Pradesh has sparked anger among Muslim organisations, prompting police to register a case against two unidentified persons.

The incident, which reportedly took place near a mosque, has drawn attention after a video of the alleged act circulated on social media.

According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday night in Garwar town, where a Durga idol immersion procession was passing by a mosque. Some participants allegedly set fire to an Islamic flag attached to an electricity pole outside the mosque.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Verma said the police became aware of the incident through social media on Thursday. Following a complaint, a case was registered on Friday against two unidentified persons in connection with the alleged burning of the flag.

Verma said strict action would be taken against those found responsible for the incident.

The incident has also triggered reactions from several Muslim organisations, which expressed their anger on social media platform X. The organisations shared a video purportedly showing some youths raising allegedly inflammatory slogans and attempting to set fire to the Islamic flag during the procession.

The video also appears to show police personnel present at the location while the alleged incident was taking place.

However, the identities of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been established in the information provided by the police.

The registration of the case marks the beginning of legal proceedings in the matter. Police have said that action will be taken against those found responsible, while further details about the investigation and the identification of the accused remain awaited.
