Kolkata court convicts five for life over 2016 terror conspiracy

Six men were arrested in September 2016 in West Bengal and Assam and were found with explosives, components for improvised explosive devices, documents, laptops and currency

A Kolkata court on Wednesday sentenced five alleged members of the banned militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life in prison over a 2016 plot to carry out bomb attacks and other subversive activities in India.

Two of those convicted, Anwar Hossain Faruque and Mohammad Rubel, are Bangladeshi nationals from Jamalpur, according to The Indian Express.

The three others were identified as Maulana Yusuf Sheikh of West Bengal’s Burdwan district, and Mohammad Sahidul Islam and Jabirul Islam from Assam.

The verdict was delivered by special judge Rohan Sinha following a trial based on an investigation by the Kolkata Police Special Task Force.

Police opened the case in 2016 after receiving intelligence inputs on suspected JMB activity.

An unidentified official told The Indian Express that intelligence indicated the men had planned to illegally enter India through North 24 Parganas district to meet associates and intended to carry out attacks in the Northeast, southern states and other parts of the country.

Six men were arrested in September 2016 in West Bengal and Assam and were found with explosives, components for improvised explosive devices, documents, laptops and currency, Hindustan Times reported, citing Additional Commissioner of Police Solomon Nesakumar.

One of the accused, Abdul Kalam, was later discharged due to insufficient evidence, the paper said.

Ministry of Home Affairs banned JMB and its affiliated groups in 2019, alleging they promoted acts of terrorism.
