Nearly 97 lakh voters dropped from Tamil Nadu draft rolls, 73 lakh in Gujarat during revision

The draft rolls place Tamil Nadu’s electorate at about 2.6 crore male and 2.7 crore female voters, while Gujarat’s voter base has shrunk to around 4.3 crore from 5 crore.

Nearly 97.3 lakh names have been removed from Tamil Nadu’s draft electoral rolls as part of a special intensive revision, while about 73.7 lakh voters were deleted in Gujarat, according to data released by election authorities.

In Tamil Nadu, officials said most of the deletions were due to changes in residence, accounting for 66.4 lakh names. Another 26.9 lakh entries were removed following the death of voters, while about 3.9 lakh were struck off for being registered in more than one place.

Election officials said that the draft rolls are provisional and that affected voters can raise objections or seek inclusion. Claims and objections in both Tamil Nadu and Gujarat can be filed until January 18.

Media reports said the revised draft list in Tamil Nadu includes about 2.6 crore male voters and 2.7 crore female voters. Chennai recorded the sharpest decline, with around 14.2 lakh names removed from the city’s rolls, representing a drop of roughly 35%.

In Gujarat, the total number of voters in the draft list has fallen to about 4.3 crore from 5 crore earlier. Of the names deleted, 51.8 lakh were linked to changes in residence, 18 lakh to deaths and around 3.8 lakh to multiple registrations.

The enumeration exercise in both states concluded on December 14. Tamil Nadu is due to hold Assembly elections in the first half of 2026, while Gujarat’s next Assembly polls are scheduled for late 2027.

The Election Commission has also published draft rolls for West Bengal, where more than 58 lakh names have been removed. The special revision is underway in nine other states and Union Territories.

In Bihar, where the exercise was completed ahead of Assembly elections in November, at least 47 lakh voters were excluded from the final rolls. The revision there triggered concerns that eligible voters could be left out, prompting several petitions before the Supreme Court.
