NIA arrests two from Uttarakhand’s Haldwani in widening Delhi blast probe

Investigators traced call records of the duo linked to a mobile number associated with Umar Nabi, the doctor believed to have been driving the Hyundai i20 car that exploded near the Red Fort metro station

India’s National Investigation Agency has arrested a cleric and an electrician from Uttarakhand’s Haldwani district in connection with the November 10 blast near Delhi’s Red Fort that killed 13 people, news agency PTI reported on Saturday.

The suspects — Mohammed Asif, imam of the Bilali mosque in Haldwani, and his associate Nazar Kamal — were detained late Friday by an NIA team with support from police in Delhi and Haldwani, PTI reported. Both men have been taken to the national capital for further questioning.

Investigators traced call records linked to a mobile number associated with Umar Nabi, the doctor believed to have been driving the Hyundai i20 car that exploded near the Red Fort metro station, PTI quoted unidentified officials as saying. Asif and Kamal were picked up from Haldwani’s Banbhulpura area.

Following the arrests, police deployed personnel from several stations in Banbhulpura under the supervision of Haldwani City Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Katyal and Lal Kuan Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepshikha Agarwal, according to PTI. Security around Asif’s home and the Bilali mosque has also been tightened, Katyal told the agency.

The explosion on November 10 left 13 people dead. Two days later, the Union government classified the incident as a “terrorist attack”.

The NIA made its first arrest in the case on November 16, detaining Amir Rashid Ali, described as an aide of Nabi. The agency alleges that the car used in the blast was registered in Ali’s name, PTI reported.

Since then, several more suspects have been taken into custody, including Jasir Bilal Wani alias Danish, Muzammil Shakeel Ganai, Adeel Ahmed Rather, Mufti Irfan Ahmad Wagay, Shaheen Saeed and Soyab, according to local media reports.

The NIA has not yet publicly disclosed a motive or details of any broader network involved, and the investigation remains ongoing.
