A video showing cricketer Furqan Bhat from south wearing a helmet printed with the Palestinian flag during a match in Jammu later circulated widely on social media.
A cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir region was questioned by police in Jammu after he was seen wearing a helmet bearing the Palestinian flag during a local tournament, The Indian Express reported.
The player, identified as Furqan Bhat from south Kashmir, was summoned along with the tournament organiser to the Domana police station on Thursday, according to sources cited by the newspaper.
Furqan Bhat was participating in the privately organised Jammu and Kashmir Champions League, held at a ground on the outskirts of Jammu city and organised by Sajid Bhat, also from Kashmir, the report said.
Representing a team known as JK11, Bhat came out to bat in the fourth over of a match against Jammu Trailblazers on Wednesday. A video showing him wearing a helmet printed with the Palestinian flag later circulated widely on social media.
Brigadier Anil Gupta, who heads the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), told The Indian Express that the association had no role in the tournament.
“The JKCA has nothing to do with this tournament. It is a privately organised event involving local players,” Gupta was quoted as saying, adding that the matter was being handled by local police as it did not fall under the association’s jurisdiction.
