Indian authorities have ordered two British tourists to leave the country after they allegedly pasted pro-Palestinian posters in the pilgrimage town of Pushkar in Rajasthan, police officials said.

The Rajasthan police issued notices on Monday directing the two to leave India after posters carrying the slogan “Free Palestine, Boycott Israel” were found at several locations in Pushkar, a popular tourist destination in Ajmer district.

Officials at the Foreigners Registration Office in Ajmer said the tourists’ visas were revoked under the Immigration and Foreigners Act and that they were asked to exit the country at the earliest.

Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Meena said the two individuals, identified as Lewis Gabriel D and Anushi Emma Christine, had arrived in India on tourist visas in January and were staying in Pushkar.

“Such activities violate visa conditions,” Meena said, adding that foreign nationals are not permitted to engage in political acts while in India on tourist visas.

The posters were removed with the assistance of the district police, officials said.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza began in October 2023 after Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel and took hostages. The subsequent Israeli offensive has resulted in large-scale destruction and heavy civilian casualties in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
