Two migrant workers killed in suspected militant attack in J&K’s Kulgam
Two migrant workers from Chhattisgarh were killed after suspected militants opened fire on them in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, police said on Saturday, in the latest attack on civilians in the Valley.

The workers were shot at in the Kellam area of Kulgam on Friday. One labourer died shortly after the attack, while the second succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Srinagar on Saturday, taking the death toll to two.

Security forces cordoned off the area after the attack and launched a search operation to trace the assailants. No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, saying he had spoken to Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and other senior security officials. He said security forces had been directed to intensify operations and “eliminate the terrorists” responsible for the attack.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the two deceased workers. The Chief Minister’s Office said the district administration would also provide immediate financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh to each family.

The attack comes a week after Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi was killed when suspected militants opened fire on a security forces’ party in Anantnag district on July 22.

Militant violence in Jammu and Kashmir has declined over the past decade, but attacks targeting security personnel and civilians, including migrant workers, have continued intermittently despite an extensive security deployment across the region.
