UP horror: Family murders eloped couple, slits their throats in public

A newlywed couple was killed in a brutal attack by the bride’s family in Gadhiya Suhagpur village, Etah district, Uttar Pradesh, police said on Sunday, The Times of India reported.

The victims, 19-year-old Shivani Kumar and her 23-year-old husband Deepak Kurt, had eloped last month and married at an Arya Samaj temple in Prayagraj against the bride’s parents’ wishes. The couple were called back to the bride’s home on Saturday.

Police said that on Sunday evening, the pair were attacked with sticks and a trowel as villagers watched. Shivani was killed on the spot, while Deepak succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to hospital.

A police case under sections 302 (murder) and 191 (abetment) has been registered. Three members of Shivani’s family – her father Ashok Kumar (45), mother Vitoli Devi (42), and sister Shilpi (20) – have been arrested, while her brothers remain at large.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates the father and brothers were involved in the attack.

Both victims worked in a private company in Prayagraj and belonged to the Lodhi-Rajput community.
