Attack sparks protests; police deploy extra forces and investigate motive, while family receives ₹10 lakh compensation and security support.
A 45-year-old Dalit woman was killed and her 20-year-old daughter abducted in Kapsad village in Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, earlier this week, police said.
The attack reportedly happened on Thursday morning. The woman was allegedly attacked with a sharp sugarcane-cutting tool while trying to protect her daughter. The attackers then took the daughter with them. She was rescued from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, on Saturday, and the main accused has been arrested.
Police said the suspect, Paras Som, worked as a compounder for a local doctor and lived in the same village. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the crime.
The incident sparked protests in the area, prompting additional security deployment. Members of political parties and activists demanded immediate arrests. Chief Minister’s office has given the victim’s family ₹10 lakh in compensation and is reportedly considering additional security measures for them.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati called the incident “extremely heartbreaking and shameful,” urging the government to take strict action against the perpetrators.
