India’s per capita gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to fall below Bangladesh’s in 2026, according to the International Monetary Fund’s latest World Economic Outlook.
Bangladesh’s per capita GDP at current prices is estimated at $2,886, compared with India’s $2,749, data released on October 13 showed.
Per capita GDP measures a country’s economic output relative to its population and is calculated by dividing total GDP by the number of people.
The IMF projections indicate that Bangladesh will retain its lead in 2027, when its per capita GDP is estimated to reach $3,219, against India’s $3,036. Bangladesh is also expected to remain ahead in 2028.
India is projected to regain the lead in 2029, with per capita GDP estimated at $3,661, compared with Bangladesh’s $3,334, the IMF data showed.
The latest estimates mark a change from the IMF’s April outlook, which had projected India’s per capita GDP to remain ahead of Bangladesh from 2027 until at least 2031.
The April report had estimated Bangladesh’s per capita GDP at $2,911 and India’s at $2,812 for the relevant projection period. It also showed India marginally ahead in 2025, with per capita GDP of $2,670 against Bangladesh’s $2,635.
Bangladesh had recorded higher per capita GDP than India in 2023 and 2024, according to the earlier estimates.
The average per capita GDP for emerging market and developing economies is projected at about $7,746, while the global average stands at around $15,889.
The World Economic Outlook, published twice a year by the IMF, assesses global economic trends and provides projections for the near and medium term.
