Millat Times editor Shams Tabrez Qasmi sits down with Hakeem Abdul Majeed Elahi to discuss Iran’s current situation, its defense strategy, and regional relations as the country navigates an ongoing war with Israel and the United States.

What is the current situation in Iran these days?
The situation in Iran is stable and highly charged with patriotic spirit. People are united and determined to defend their country. Since the start of the conflict, Iran has been retaliating with missiles and drones. While civilians have unfortunately suffered in attacks on schools, hospitals, and markets, the population remains resolute.

Is Iran ready for a long war with the United States and Israel?
Yes. Iran is fully prepared to defend its independence, dignity, and people. The army and Revolutionary Guard are ready to respond decisively.

Iran has been retaliating since day one, firing missiles and drones at American bases in the region. At the same time, can you assess the losses Iran has suffered so far?
It is difficult to know the full extent of losses in other countries or on the American side because such information has not been publicly announced. In some places, reporting on the damage has even been restricted.

In Iran, however, many civilians have unfortunately lost their lives because the United States and Israel have targeted civilian areas. Several schools have been attacked. In the city of Minab, for example, a school was reportedly hit twice, and 173 girls between the ages of seven and twelve were killed.

Hospitals have also been targeted. In Tehran, the well-known Gandhi Hospital, which specializes in children’s care, was attacked in recent days, leading to casualties among young patients. Universities, markets, and shopping centers have also been struck.

The exact number of casualties is still unclear, but the loss of civilian life has been significant.

Can you give us an assessment of the Iranian forces’ response to these attacks?
Iranian forces are highly motivated and vigilant. They act decisively while maintaining communication with central command when needed. They are committed to protecting the nation and its citizens.

Who will be the next Supreme Leader of Iran?
Leadership in Iran is institutional, not personal. If the Supreme Leader cannot continue, a council assumes responsibility temporarily until a new leader is elected according to constitutional procedures. Due to the current situation, they are working to nominate a successor as soon as possible.

How is the government functioning right now? Is it in touch with Iranian embassies? Can the central government in Tehran communicate effectively?
Yes. We maintain daily communication with Tehran and other authorities. Provincial authorities are continuing to fulfill their responsibilities, even if there are temporary communication challenges.

Some claim that all government infrastructure has been destroyed. What is your assessment?
That is inaccurate. While hospitals, schools, universities, and some military bases have been targeted, the government and provincial authorities continue to function. Iran is a large country, and operations continue across all provinces.

If this war continues, is there a possibility of civil war in Iran?
That is unlikely. The people support the government, and provincial authorities continue to manage their responsibilities effectively.

Are Iranian forces on the frontiers in contact with central command? Do they act on instructions or independently?
Some major decisions require central approval, but frontline commanders have general orders and the authority to act independently in urgent situations. This ensures rapid responses to attacks.

The relationship between India and Iran used to be strong, but recently India seems to favor Israel and the United States. Why?
I disagree. India and Iran share a deep historical and cultural connection spanning thousands of years. While there may be differing approaches at times, the ties remain strong at both governmental and people-to-people levels.

Iranian warships were attacked and destroyed by the United States in the Indian Ocean. Have you received any communication from Indian officials regarding this?
No official communication has been received, though many individuals expressed condolences. The attack on unarmed Iranian vessels was unjust.

The President of Iran recently stated that Iran will not attack Arab countries. How did this come about?
This is consistent with Iran’s long-standing policy. Iran does not intend to attack neighboring countries. Its actions are strictly defensive, aimed at U.S. bases and aggression, not regional neighbors.

People in India have shown support for Iran. How do you view this response?
It was remarkable and moving. The Indian people demonstrated solidarity against oppression and aggression, reflecting their morality, humanity, and longstanding connection with Iran.
