At least 40 people, including students, were killed and 48 others injured in an Israeli strike on a girls’ primary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab, state media reported on Saturday.

Iran’s state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, citing a provincial official, said the school in Hormozgan province was hit during attacks earlier in the day. Further details were not immediately available.

There was no immediate comment from Israeli authorities on the report.

Israel and the United States launched joint strikes on Iran early Saturday, saying the action was aimed at removing “threats” posed by the Iranian government. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump released separate video statements following the attacks.

Iran described the strikes as a violation of its sovereignty, vowed to respond and said it had launched retaliatory attacks.

The escalation comes as Oman has been mediating talks between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme. The latest round of negotiations was held in Geneva on Thursday.
