Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is leading Republican Mike Rogers in the closely watched Michigan Senate election held on November 3, 2026. His potential victory could make him the first Muslim ever elected to the United States Senate, marking a historic moment for Muslim representation in American politics.

According to preliminary election figures available on November 4, El-Sayed is leading with 54.3 per cent of the vote, against 44 per cent for Rogers, with approximately 23 per cent of votes counted. However, the race has not yet been officially called, and the final outcome remains pending.

El-Sayed, 41, is a physician and former director of Detroit’s health department. He entered the race with a progressive agenda focused on expanding healthcare access, reducing living costs, strengthening workers’ rights and challenging corporate influence in politics.

His campaign also attracted national attention because of his outspoken criticism of US military support for Israel and its actions in Gaza. He made healthcare reform and economic inequality central issues throughout his campaign.

The contest against Rogers, a former Republican congressman backed by President Donald Trump, became particularly controversial. El-Sayed faced repeated attacks over his Muslim identity and political positions, which critics described as Islamophobic.

The Michigan Senate seat became vacant after Democratic Senator Gary Peters decided not to seek re-election.

If the current lead translates into a confirmed victory, El-Sayed will make history as the first Muslim member of the US Senate.
