Those praising Mahatma Gandhi’s killer must be named and shamed: Varun Gandhi after Hindutva fanatics trend ‘Godse Zindabad’

BJP MP Varun Gandhi has reacted angrily to the Twitter trend ‘Godse Zindabad’ launched by Hindutva fanatics on the birth anniversary of India’s Father Of The Nation. Gandhi, a BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, said that those trending ‘Godse Zindabad’ were shaming the nation.

He tweeted, “India has always been a spiritual superpower, but it is the Mahatma who articulated our nation’s spiritual underpinnings through his being & gave us a moral authority that remains our greatest strength even today. Those tweeting ‘Godse zindabad’ are irresponsibly shaming the nation.”

News agency PTI quoted the young BJP MP as saying, “We must not forget the respect that India has internationally is because of Mahatma Gandhi and the ideals that he represented. The people who are tweeting “Godse Zindabad” should be named and shamed publicly. The lunatic fringe must not be allowed to enter the mainstream.”

Hindutva fanatics, many of whom enjoy the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had trended ‘Nathuram Godse Zindabad’ on the birth anniversary of Gandhi.

Godse, the first terrorist of independent India, had killed Gandhi on 30 January 1948. He was later convicted and sentenced to death.

RSS supporters have long admired Godse, but their admiration for independent India’s first terrorist became loud and open after Modi came to power in 2014. Many analysts believe that the so-called lunatic fringe within the Hindutva outfit became mainstream in 2014 with Modi’s elevation to the post of India’s prime minister.

Modi has had to face considerable criticism for following some Twitter users, who are notorious for peddling hate against India’s minority community.

Ironically, Modi has never missed any opportunity to shower his praise for Gandhi during his international visits. More recently, after his meeting with US President Joe Biden, Modi had tweeted, “Gandhi Ji spoke about Trusteeship, a concept which is very important for our planet in the times to come.”

The Indian PM tweeted on Saturday. “I bow to respected Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. His noble principles are globally relevant and give strength to millions.”
