Veteran Indian actor Dharmendra Deol died in Mumbai on Monday of age-related ailments. He was 89.
Earlier in the month, Dharmendra had been hospitalised twice. On Oct. 31, he was admitted after complaining of breathing difficulties but was discharged within hours. He was taken to hospital again on Nov. 10. The following day, after reports and rumours of his death, his family issued a statement saying he was “responding to treatment and is recovering”.
Dharmendra is survived by his wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and six children: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, Ahana Deol, Ajeeta and Vijeta.
He made his acting debut in the 1960 Hindi film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and went on to appear in more than 300 films. He first became a major star with OP Ralhan’s Phool Aur Patthar (1964), and went on to perform in some of Indian cinema’s most beloved films, including Sholay, Dharam Veer, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Blackmail, Seeta Aur Geeta and Chupke Chupke.
In later years, he also appeared in films such as Johnny Gaddaar, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.
