The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday alleged that the father of one of its volunteers in West Bengal’s Bankura district died after being critically injured in an attack by workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The incident reportedly took place in Karisunda village in the Indus block. Police confirmed that a person had died but said they had not received a formal complaint about the incident.
CJP, however, alleged that its volunteer, Abdul Hafiz, was unable to file a complaint despite approaching the police.
According to the campaign, Abdul had visited a government primary school in Karisunda as part of its nationwide campaign to assess and improve the condition of government schools. Abdul later alleged that BJP workers went to his home and assaulted him and members of his family. His father suffered a serious head injury in the incident.
In a social media post on Thursday, CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh alleged that Abdul and his family were subsequently subjected to further intimidation. She claimed that people had surrounded the family’s house and prevented them from leaving.
Singh also accused local police of failing to act on the allegations. She said Abdul’s father died from his injuries on Friday night.
“The police did not perform their duty to maintain law and order,” Singh said, adding that CJP was providing support to Abdul and his family.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said the organisation would send a team to West Bengal and seek justice for the family. He also called for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the death.
The allegations have not been independently verified. Police have confirmed the death but had not received a complaint concerning the alleged assault.
