The Delhi High Court has sought responses from political commentator Abhijit Iyer-Mitra and several media outlets over a lawsuit filed by Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Saurav Das, who alleges that his residential address and other personal information were disclosed online.
The court has given Iyer-Mitra, The Pamphlet, Law Beat, The Sunday Guardian and the social media account The Jaipur Dialogues 10 days to respond to the suit.
Das has accused the defendants of violating his privacy and putting his safety at risk by publishing details identifying his home in Delhi.
His lawyer told the court that people associated with The Pamphlet entered Das’ shared residence without permission on Aug. 5 and recorded parts of the property. The video was later posted on social media platform X and reposted by Iyer-Mitra, the lawyer said.
The posts containing Das’ address have since been removed from X. Das has asked the court to ensure that the material is not republished.
Das is seeking damages of more than 2 crore rupees and an order preventing the defendants from publishing or sharing his residential details. He has also asked X and Google to remove the material and take steps to prevent its further circulation.
According to the lawsuit, a video showing his residential address received more than 2.1 million views and was reposted on Aug. 10.
Das has also alleged that Iyer-Mitra disclosed his address during a Law Beat programme by identifying his neighbour and making an incorrect claim about his monthly rent.
The CJP spokesperson said he had filed a police complaint on Aug. 5 and warned the defendants about security concerns, but alleged that the information continued to circulate.
Das said the disclosure was particularly concerning because he had previously received threats of violence, and that the publication of his residential details could expose him, his family and other residents to harassment or physical harm.
The case will next be heard on Sept. 14.
