The price of domestic cooking gas was increased by 29 rupees per cylinder on Sunday, marking the second hike in three months as India faces rising energy costs linked to developments in global fuel markets.

The price of a standard 14.2-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder in New Delhi rose to 942 rupees from 913 rupees, according to fuel retailers.

The increase follows a 60-rupee hike announced in March, when energy prices climbed amid tensions and conflict in West Asia.

Despite previous price revisions, state-run fuel marketing companies were reportedly incurring losses of 703 rupees on every domestic LPG cylinder before the latest increase, according to local media reports citing unnamed sources.

LPG prices in India are influenced by international crude oil rates, which affect production and transportation costs and shape broader energy market trends.

The latest revision comes amid a series of fuel price increases across the country. Earlier this month, Indian Oil Corp. raised the price of a 19-kilogram commercial LPG cylinder by 42 rupees, taking the retail price in New Delhi to 3,113.5 rupees.

Petrol and diesel prices have increased by a combined 7.5 rupees per litre since mid-May, while compressed natural gas (CNG) prices have risen by 6 rupees per kilogram.

India relies heavily on imported energy, sourcing about 88% of its crude oil and roughly half of its natural gas from overseas markets. Much of those supplies move through the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route that has faced disruptions because of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
