Police in Kerala’s Kannur district have arrested Vimal Shivashakthi, identified as a cadre of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), over allegations of posting sexually abusive and Islamophobic comments targeting a girl child on Facebook.
According to media reports, the accused was arrested by Muzhakkunnu police and subsequently remanded to judicial custody by a local court.
The controversy reportedly began after the child’s photograph was shared on social media following her qualification for a national-level abacus competition.
The girl was being felicitated for her achievement when the alleged offensive comments appeared beneath the photograph, according to Young Democrats leader Younus Vilakkode.
Vilakkode said that both he and the child’s father had lodged complaints regarding the comments. He identified Shivashakthi as an RSS worker from Azhiyur in Kerala.
The arrest followed the complaints, although further details about the police investigation, the specific legal provisions invoked and the court proceedings have not been independently confirmed in the available reports.
The incident has raised concerns about online abuse directed at children, particularly when their educational achievements become the target of hateful or sexually inappropriate remarks.
Social media platforms are widely used to celebrate students’ accomplishments, but such incidents highlight the risks of harassment and communal hostility in online spaces. Abacus competitions test participants’ mental arithmetic skills, including their ability to perform calculations quickly and accurately. Qualification for a national-level competition can represent a significant achievement for a young student.
The case also underscores the importance of protecting children’s dignity and privacy online.
Authorities are expected to establish the facts through the legal process, while the allegations against the accused remain subject to investigation and judicial determination.
