A Manipuri musician died in New Delhi on Monday after he was allegedly attacked by a group of delivery workers and roadside eatery employees following a dispute over noise outside his home, according to police and media reports.
Chongtham Vikram Singh had gone outside his apartment in Kilokari village on Sunday night and asked the group to stop shouting and drinking near his residence, his family said. The argument escalated into a physical assault, leaving Singh critically injured, The Indian Express reported.
His son, Yaiphaba, took him to Holy Family Hospital in Okhla, where he died in the early hours of Monday. The hospital attributed his death to haemorrhagic shock resulting from blunt-force injuries.
Police have arrested seven men and detained a juvenile in connection with the case, the Press Trust of India reported. The arrested men were identified as Bharat Kumar, Pramod, Ramzan Khan, Deepanshu, Mohan Vishwakarma, Vijay and Mannu.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Vineet Kumar said senior police officials had met Singh’s family and members of the Manipuri community and assured them that action would be taken in accordance with the law, The Indian Express reported.
Singh was known for his contribution to the Manipuri rock music scene. He played lead guitar for the rock band Phoenix in the early 1980s and later became a member of Eastern Dark. He subsequently moved to Delhi and worked as a music teacher.
Vivek Sharma, Phoenix’s lead vocalist, remembered Singh as an irreplaceable friend and elder brother.
