A Muslim groom and his maternal uncle were arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district for allegedly serving beef at a wedding reception, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Friday, citing police.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sumit Shukla said the groom, Farman, his uncle Salman, and banquet hall owner Anees had been booked under the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act.
Police seized an SUV allegedly used to transport the meat, as well as the suspected beef, Shukla said.
According to a complaint, Farman married on June 16 and hosted a walima, or wedding reception, on June 18 at Mughal Banquet Hall in Kairana town, where beef was allegedly served.
Police said the meat was transported in an SUV that had been gifted to the groom as part of the wedding celebrations.
Authorities were searching for other people allegedly involved in the incident, Shukla added.
