Twelve Indian nationals were among 13 people killed in an explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial complex, home to the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility, Qatari and Indian authorities said on Monday.

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said the blast occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility within the Ras Laffan complex on Sunday. The dead also included workers of Pakistani origin, he said during a press briefing.

Sixty people were injured in the incident and are receiving medical treatment, al-Kaabi said, adding that preliminary findings indicated the explosion was accidental and not the result of sabotage or any hostile act.

The Indian Embassy in Qatar said Qatari authorities had confirmed the deaths of 12 Indian nationals and that all injured individuals were in stable condition.

Ras Laffan is a critical hub for global energy markets, accounting for around 19% of worldwide LNG exports in 2025. The facility plays a key role in supplying natural gas to major importers, including India and China.

State-owned QatarEnergy said the explosion occurred as workers were attempting to restore services at the export terminal, according to reports by international media.

The incident comes months after the Ras Laffan complex suffered significant damage during the conflict in West Asia. In March, Iran targeted the facility in retaliation for strikes on energy infrastructure linked to its South Pars gas field, which it shares with Qatar. Qatari authorities had then reported extensive damage to parts of the industrial complex.

India, the world’s second-largest importer of Qatari LNG after China last year, has been closely monitoring developments in Qatar amid concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies. The conflict in West Asia has already heightened volatility in global energy markets and raised concerns about fuel security among major importing nations.

Authorities have not yet announced the cause of Sunday’s explosion, and investigations are ongoing.
