The Muslim World League (MWL) has condemned Israel’s plans to build 1,234 settlement homes in the E1 area of the occupied West Bank, warning that the project could threaten the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The condemnation followed Israel’s opening of tenders for the construction of the settlement homes in E1, an area east of occupied East Jerusalem. The plan forms part of a broader effort to create a continuous Israeli settlement corridor linking East Jerusalem with the Ma’ale Adumim settlement.
The MWL described the E1 project as a “dangerous plan” and rejected what it called “all illegal Israeli settlement policies” in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The organisation said settlement activity violates international law and United Nations resolutions and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It called on the international community to take action to ensure an immediate end to settlement policies and other measures aimed at changing the geographical and demographic character of the occupied Palestinian territory.
The E1 area has long been regarded as strategically significant because development there could affect the territorial continuity of a future Palestinian state. The MWL said Israel’s settlement policies threaten the prospects for such a state.
The organisation also reiterated its support for Palestinians’ right to establish an “independent and sovereign Palestinian state” under a two-state solution.
The MWL described the two-state framework as the “only path” towards achieving what it called a just and lasting peace in the region.
