Uttarakhand authorities have shut or sealed five more madrasas in Dehradun and Haldwani for allegedly failing to meet recognition requirements, taking the number of such institutions closed across the state to 20, the government said.
Of the 20, 17 have been sealed, while the managements of three have submitted written undertakings saying they have stopped operating, Minority Affairs Secretary Parag Madhukar Dhakate said.
The latest action follows the state government’s abolition in July of the Uttarakhand Madrasa Board and its replacement with the Uttarakhand State Authority for Minority Education (USAME), which regulates institutions run by the state’s notified minority communities.
In Dehradun, authorities sealed Madrasa Jamia-tus-Salam Al-Islamia in Azad Colony. The managements of Madrasa Dar-e-Arqam and Madrasa Darul Uloom Rahimia submitted undertakings that they had ceased operations.
In Haldwani, authorities sealed Madrasa Jamia Nooria Barkate Amina and an unrecognised madrasa in Indira Nagar after their managements allegedly failed to produce required recognition documents, city magistrate A.B. Vajpayee said.
Haldwani Sub-Divisional Magistrate Monika Arya said institutions that previously operated under the old Madrasa Board must now obtain recognition from USAME and the state Education Department under the Uttarakhand Minority Education Act.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said the state wants young people to receive modern, employment-oriented education and directed madrasas to follow the state government’s curriculum.
The new framework replaced the Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board Act, 2016, and related recognition rules. The state said 452 madrasas had previously been registered with and recognised by the board.
The government has also previously sealed more than 200 unrecognised madrasas as part of an earlier enforcement drive.
