A Christian family in West Bengal’s Howrah district has alleged that a group of people attacked them for three consecutive days and pressured them to give up Christianity and embrace Hinduism, according to a police complaint.
Putul Manna and her husband, Kanchan Manna, said they had been holding prayer meetings at their home in Ghoraberia Dakshin Bhatora village under the Bhatora police outpost of Joypur police station in Amta.
The family alleged that nearly 200 people entered their home on Sept. 16 and demanded that they renounce Christianity and convert to Hinduism.
The couple said they were surrounded again the following night and subjected to verbal abuse and physical assault in front of their two minor children.
On Sept. 17, a group of about 40 people allegedly returned to the house, threw household belongings outside and tried to force the family to leave, the complaint said.
Putul Manna alleged that she was dragged by her hair and beaten, while her husband was also assaulted.
The family further alleged that the attackers tried to force the couple to sign a document stating that they had disowned their children.
Manna has sought legal action against those named in the complaint and requested that a case be registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The family has also sought police protection for the couple and their two children, saying they feared further attacks.
The complaint called for the family’s constitutional and religious rights to be protected and for them to be allowed to remain in their home without harassment or coercion.
