Thirteen people suspected of being undocumented Bangladeshi nationals were detained in Gurugram during a verification drive conducted by the Haryana Police, officials said on Tuesday.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Naveen Sharma, the operation was carried out by the crime branch following intelligence inputs related to security and law enforcement concerns.

The individuals were reportedly living in different parts of the city. Police said some were staying in informal settlements, while others were employed at construction sites.

Authorities conducted verification checks, questioning and searches before taking the 13 individuals into custody, Sharma said.

During the inquiry, police allegedly recovered Bangladeshi identity documents from the detainees. Officials also claimed that the individuals had been in contact with family members in Bangladesh through phone calls.

Police said the legal process for deportation has been initiated. Until the proceedings are completed, the detainees will be housed at a designated holding centre.

The detentions come amid an intensified crackdown on suspected undocumented immigrants in several BJP-ruled states following the April 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

In recent months, law enforcement agencies have carried out verification drives targeting Bengali-speaking residents, many of whom have been asked to furnish proof of Indian citizenship.

There have also been reports of individuals being sent to Bangladesh after authorities questioned their citizenship status. In some cases, people who were later found to be Indian citizens were brought back after state agencies verified their documents.

Earlier this month, Ahmedabad Police detained more than 290 people suspected of being undocumented Bangladeshi migrants during a large-scale verification operation launched on the basis of intelligence inputs.
