The court directed all parties involved in the case to complete their pleadings by December 31, 2026.
A bench comprising Justices M. M. Sundresh and P. B. Varale passed the directions while hearing the petitions challenging the amended Waqf law. The matter concerns the constitutional validity of the legislation, which has been challenged through multiple petitions before the apex court.
During the proceedings, the bench also allowed applicants who had earlier filed interlocutory applications and were subsequently directed to be treated in that capacity to file separate writ petitions. The court gave them two weeks to complete the process.
The bench further directed that copies of the newly filed petitions be served on the nodal counsel appointed in the matter. The nodal counsel was asked to compile the judgements and legal precedents relied upon by the petitioners to support their arguments against the legislation.
The court also sought a response from the Centre’s side. It asked the Additional Solicitor General to file a response to the written submissions already presented in the case.
By setting December 31, 2026, as the deadline for completing pleadings, the bench made it clear that all parties must finish their submissions before the next hearing.
The Supreme Court has now listed the matter for further hearing on January 21, 2027. The next proceedings are expected to take place after the completion of written submissions and the filing of relevant legal documents by all sides.
The petitions challenge the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, and seek the Supreme Court’s examination of the provisions introduced through the amended legislation.
