Prominent Muslim scholar Maulana Sajjad Naumani on Tuesday met with Dr Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, at the Iran Cultural House in Delhi on Monday, calling for unity among Muslims amid the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.

The nearly two-hour meeting, conducted in Arabic, focused on fostering solidarity between Shia and Sunni Muslims.

“In this war, Shia and Sunni are united. This is a war of truth and falsehood. All Muslims are together without any religious or sectarianism,” he said.

Naumani said he conveyed a message from the Iranian representative noting that while minor sectarian differences may exist, Muslims should remain united against external threats. “Against America and Israel, we are a whole nation, united. We are giving this message to the whole country,” he added.

The meeting was also attended by Shams Tabrez Qasmi, Editor of Millat Times, who played a crucial role in arranging and facilitating the interaction. His efforts helped bring the two sides together and ensured the discussion took place smoothly, highlighting the role of media figures in fostering dialogue and unity.

During the meeting, Naumani also handed a financial contribution to support Iran and submitted a written statement, Dr. Ilahi said. The Iranian official expressed appreciation for Naumani’s visit, saying it had brought “more strength and courage” to those present despite the scholar’s health challenges.

The visit comes as tensions in West Asia continue to affect India, particularly its energy and trade interests. The United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran in late February, leading to retaliatory attacks and a partial blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of global oil supplies pass. President Donald Trump has said American forces could withdraw from the campaign “within two or three weeks,” though hostilities continue.

Naumani described his interaction with Dr Ilahi as “a very good conversation” and said he felt honoured to participate in promoting Muslim unity. Officials at the Iran Cultural House said the meeting aimed to send a message of solidarity to the wider Indian Muslim community.
