A Christian organisation office-bearer in Chhattisgarh was arrested after allegedly posting a comment on social media that hurt Hindu religious sentiments, The Hindu reported on Saturday, citing Raipur police.
Police registered a first information report against Arun Pannalal, president of the Chhattisgarh Christian Forum, following a complaint by a Bharatiya Janata Party leader.
BJP spokesperson Amit Chimnani alleged that Pannalal had posted a “highly objectionable” comment on a Facebook post concerning a Hindu deity.
Pannalal was charged under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to promoting enmity between groups, deliberately outraging religious feelings and intentionally insulting a person with the intent to provoke a breach of peace.
He was arrested on Friday night and remanded in judicial custody on Saturday, Yaman Dewangan, inspector in charge of the Raipur Civil Lines police station, told The Indian Express.
Pannalal has previously spoken out about alleged attacks and discrimination against Christians in Chhattisgarh.
