A video showing a group of men allegedly harassing two Class 10 students in Bihar’s Jamui has surfaced online, prompting police action and the arrest of three people.
The incident took place on Saturday evening as the two teenagers, a boy and a girl, were returning from coaching classes on a scooter, according to reports.
The video shows the students being surrounded by a group of men. One man is seen pulling the boy by his collar, while another, wearing a mask, follows the girl as she tries to get away. The girl is seen pleading with the men before the video ends.
Police began investigating after the footage spread on social media. Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Dayal said officers had contacted the teenager and were examining the video to identify those involved.
The teenagers are reportedly students at a private school in Jamui town. They had been travelling along the Jamui-Lakhisarai road when they were allegedly stopped by a group of men.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, while police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the episode and searching for other suspects.
The incident has drawn condemnation from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who called for strict action against those responsible under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, or POCSO.
“A young girl, hands folded, begged to be let go while goons groped her and dragged her away,” Gandhi said in a post on X, questioning why a girl should not be safe on a public road at 7 p.m.
Bihar minister Sunil Kumar also condemned the incident and said the local administration would take appropriate action against those responsible. He said the police would arrest anyone found guilty, while cautioning against using the incident to characterise the entire state as lawless.
Police are continuing their investigation and efforts to identify and arrest the remaining suspects.
