According to Federal Election Commission filings, the leadership PAC will raise funds to support political allies and is separate from El-Sayed’s election campaign.
The name ‘Habibi’, an Arabic term of endearment meaning ‘my beloved’, became a defining feature of his campaign. Supporters wore ‘Habibi for Abdul’ T-shirts, while El-Sayed used the phrase to address US Vice-President JD Vance in his victory speech.
“JD, habibi,” he said, referring to the irony of Vance being constitutionally required to swear him into office in January.
El-Sayed, who is set to become the first Muslim senator from Michigan, campaigned openly on his faith and opposition to US military aid to Israel. He also faced repeated attacks over his religious identity.
President Donald Trump called him a “jihadist” and repeatedly referred to him by his middle name, Mohamed. His Republican rival, former congressman Mike Rogers, also sought to link him to extremist organisations, despite no established connection.
El-Sayed countered the attacks by highlighting his faith and commitment to “serve God and to serve our neighbours”.
His election victory in Michigan, a key battleground state, and the launch of Habibi PAC could give him a platform to support Democratic candidates and shape the party’s political direction ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
